As we have completed the third organizing training focused on committee building, the members that participated were very supportive of the program. The techniques that were utilized helped them understand the dynamics of building and dealing with a committee. The “committee” is the core to an organizing drive as committee members communicate and move the workers towards ultimately gaining a contract. Moving them behind the issues that compel the workers to fight is a very difficult process. The members at the training were overwhelmed by the problems that come with handling a committee at the beginning of the day. By the end of the training the importance of having an agenda and a plan with an undertone of educating and inoculating, was clear. Once armed with these tools their success was realized in the breakout groups and the participants found themselves progressing. The members that participated in the first two training's excelled because of the basics covered in “one-on-ones” and identifying leaders. Bringing the information from the first training's helped in identifying potential problems when handling the committee. Understanding the idea of listening to issues then identifying leaders helps to build a solid committee, a participating member from Local 542 remarked. The members are walking through the steps of organizing and recognizing the difficulties as well as the detailed knowledge of the Organizer. As the training's progress, the information utilized in each of them will intertwine bringing a clear understanding of organizing. The program has been recognized by other unions as they have reached out to us offering support, resources and bodies. As we adopt projects and build campaigns we will use their support which will make the program very successful.
